Have questions about therapy? You’re not alone.
Our FAQ is here to answer the basics—what to expect, how to prepare, insurance info, and more. Whether you’re new to therapy or just curious about how it works, these answers are designed to help you feel informed and comfortable taking the next step toward your mental health journey.
What can I expect in my first therapy session?
Your first session is all about getting to know each other. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, your goals, and how we can work together. It’s a chance for you to ask questions and decide if this is the right fit for you.
How long are therapy sessions?
Most sessions last about 50 minutes. This gives us enough time to check in, work through issues, and set goals without feeling rushed.
Is therapy confidential?
Absolutely. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy. What you share stays between us, with some exceptions required by law (like risk of harm). I’m happy to explain this more in your first session.
What if I don't have insurance?
No insurance? No problem. We offer affordable self-pay options and can discuss payment plans to make therapy accessible.
Do you offer telehealth sessions?
Yes! I provide secure telehealth appointments that you can attend from anywhere in Iowa. I am working on purchasing a office space to offer face to face sessions soon.
How do I know if therapy is working?
Therapy is a process, and progress can look different for everyone. You might notice changes in how you handle stress, communicate, or understand yourself. We’ll regularly check in on your goals and adjust the approach as needed.
How do I schedule or cancel an appointment?
You can schedule or cancel appointments through our client portal or by contacting the office directly. We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations.
How often should I attend therapy?
Most clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum, but the frequency can be adjusted based on your needs and goals. Some people transition to biweekly or monthly sessions as they progress.
What if I don 't feel ready to open up?
That’s completely normal. Therapy is your space and happens at your pace. Building trust takes time, and I’m here to support you every step of the way without pressure.
How do you handle emergencies or crises?
If you’re experiencing a crisis, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Therapy sessions are scheduled appointments and not for emergencies, but I can help connect you to crisis resources.
Is therapy just talking or will I get homework?
Therapy is mostly conversation, but sometimes you might be asked to try exercises or reflections between sessions to support your growth.
What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't work?
Not every therapist or approach is the right fit. It’s normal to need a few tries to find the right match. I’m here to work with you where you are and adjust as we go.
Can couples therapy help if we're thinking about separation?
Yes. Couples therapy can provide a safe space to explore your feelings, improve communication, and make decisions with clarity—even if that means separation or divorce.
What if I need to reschedule last minute?
We understand life happens. Please give as much notice as possible to reschedule. Last-minute changes may have a cancellation fee, which we’ll discuss when you begin therapy. This fee is waived if you reschedule in the same week.
Can I bring a family member or friend to a session?
Occasionally, family or friends can join sessions if it supports your goals. Let’s talk about what’s best for you.
What about if I'm unsure about what I want from therapy?
That’s okay! Part of therapy is figuring out your goals. We’ll explore what you want to get out of this experience together.
